But instead of simply arresting the allegedly defaulting driver, the policemen on patrol duty deflated all four tyres of his vehicle and brutalized the man.
It was the maltreatment of the driver that attracted passersby and other commercial motorists who engaged the policemen in a free for all.
Our correspondent reports that it took the intervention of some soldiers who were also on patrol duty to calm the situation.
