China also wants the United States and South Korea to reciprocate by putting an end to their annual joint military exercises in the South China Sea.
China’s Foreign Minister WANG YI made the demands after the United States began rolling out a missile defence system in South Korea in reaction to the test-launch of four missiles by North Korea in violation of international sanctions.
The Chinese official, who was speaking on the sidelines of an annual parliamentary meeting, said the Korean peninsula was like two accelerating trains, coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way.
He said a mutual halt of military operations would be the first step towards easing tensions and reopening negotiations.
