The State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, VICTOR ISUKU, said the blast was set off by a female suicide bomber around 8:30 in the morning.
ISUKU who is a Deputy Superintendent of Police, told newsmen that only the suicide bomber was killed, as she was shot by security operatives just as her Improvised Explosive Device was detonated.
He said a male suicide bomber was also killed in the first explosion, but the Improvised Explosive Device strapped on him was eventually neutralized.
Before the incident; security information had gone out that suspected terrorists had infiltrated Maiduguri on Christmas Day with primed suicide bombers.
This was reported to have happened while military chiefs and government officials were celebrating the reopening of two major roads in Borno State that were closed in the heat of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Earlier; the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji LAI MOHAMMED said the reopened Gubio-Damasak Road and the Maiduguri-Mungono-Baga Road are of strategic importance to the economy of the Lake Chad region.
