The President of the B-Dere Youth Council, Cletus Dumbari-Dube, has condemned allegations reportedly made by Gani Topba, leader of the Conscience of the Ogoni People, accusing philanthropist Leesi Maol of working against the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland.
Dumbari-Dube described the allegation as provocative and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of Maol. He said the philanthropist has contributed significantly to the development of Ogoniland and should not be subjected to what he termed unfounded accusations.
He warned that the B-Dere Youth Council would not remain silent while Maol’s image is being damaged and issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Topba to retract the statement or face legal action.
In a related development, another B-Dere indigene, Ledisi Dey, described Topba as a political opportunist whose activities centre on the character assassination of prominent individuals. He alleged that the comments were aimed at discrediting respected members of society for personal and political gain and warned him to desist from what he called a campaign of blackmail.
