Here, our correspondent Sandra Kenneth visited Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State where their hospital have been abandoned for over 50 years after it was established by Southern American missionaries.
The southern American Missionaries built and were running the hospital for years until the civil war in 1957 when it was abandoned and these missionaries had to leave the country.
A local government with over One thousand residents have been left to suffer for over fifty years as Rivers State Government which at the time took over responsibility of the hospital but abandoned it months after it took over.
Here, these people told Today FM that before they could access medical care, they travel to a neighboring state, Bayelsa or they travel for about an hour twenty minutes to Port Harcourt before they could get a hospital.
They decried the high rate of deaths as a result of water borne diseases, maternal deaths, and other Illness adding that cases of emergencies have led to death due to the distance in assessing medical facility.
A local government with over 80 working oil wells also lacks access to portable water have been surviving through Orashi River, where they wash, drink and cook from the same water.
They further called on State government to come to their aid.
