On one hand, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress are observing a joint Workers Day march at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Dignitaries have been arriving at the Stadium around Elekahia area of Port Harcourt, and the event is billed to begin about now, as labour leaders and government officials are expected to deliver goodwill messages.
Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA is also monitoring a street rally organized by the newly formed United Labour Congress in Port Harcourt.
State Chairman of ULC, CHARLES ELETO, said they decided to the take the May Day rally to the streets to deliver their message at the doorsteps of workers in the state.
You will recall that the United Labour Congress was formed out of disagreement that greeted the last election of national executives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, which produced the ALIYU WABBA leadership of the NLC.
JOE AJAERO who was the rival candidate in the disputed election later mobilized his supporters to form the ULC.
The Rivers State executive council of ULC was inaugurated only two weeks ago under the leadership of CHARLES ELETO, who is also the Chairman of the Port Harcourt Zone of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, NUPENG.
