The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring oil-polluted mangrove forests in Ogoniland as the world marks the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
In a statement, the agency said it has successfully restored 560 hectares of degraded mangrove forests under the first phase of its restoration programme and has commenced a second phase covering an additional 438 hectares across seven Ogoni communities.
HYPREP said the restoration initiative has enhanced biodiversity, leading to the return of fish and other aquatic species, while strengthening climate resilience and supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
The agency also described the designation of the Ogoni Mangrove Wetland as a Ramsar Site of International Importance as a major milestone in efforts to protect the ecosystem.
HYPREP called on host communities and other stakeholders to support ongoing mangrove conservation efforts to promote environmental sustainability and economic development across the Niger Delta.
