The Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Rivers State, Tamuno Ibiyemi Life Jim-George, has stressed that adults with parental or guardianship responsibilities have no right to abuse, violate or exploit children in any form.
Speaking in an interview with Today’s ULOMA NWOSU, Life Jim-George said FIDA Nigeria continues to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, stressing that children are entitled to safety, protection, care and proper upbringing.
Reacting to a recent case trending online involving a mother who allegedly abused her child with a sex toy, she said the woman had been arrested through the intervention of the FIDA Nigeria network and would face legal proceedings.
Life Jim-George said the affected child would be removed from the abusive environment and taken to a safe place for counselling and psychological support.
She added that the child would be helped to understand that the abuse was not their fault and that they did not deserve what happened.
The FIDA Rivers State Chairperson urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities while protecting the identity and dignity of affected children.
She noted that existing child-rights laws provide procedures for prosecuting alleged offenders and prescribing punishment where they are found guilty.
