The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced an investigation into the disbursement and utilisation of scholarship funds allocated to PAMO University of Medical Sciences.
The Adhoc Committee investigating the funds presented its preliminary report during the House’s 44th Legislative Sitting on Monday. Committee Chairman, Dumle Maol, said invitation letters had been sent to the Vice Chancellor of PAMO University, the Rivers State Ministry of Education and other relevant parties.
Maol said the invitations were issued in line with Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and other relevant laws. Speaker Martin Amaewhule directed the committee to conduct the investigation diligently and ensure fair hearing for all parties, stressing the Assembly’s constitutional power to summon persons and request relevant documents.
The probe follows the Assembly’s decision to remove the six-billion-naira scholarship grant proposed for PAMO University from the 2026 Appropriation Law. The committee is expected to determine the total amount disbursed to the university since the scholarship scheme began and how the funds were utilised.
Meanwhile, the House has adopted the recommendation of its Committee on Public Petitions to initiate a bill for the re-establishment of the Government Sea School, Isaka.
The decision followed consultations with stakeholders, with the proposed legislation expected to update the school’s mandate in line with contemporary maritime standards and the demands of the blue economy.
