Vice President YEMI OSINBAJO has called on Nigerian leaders to work towards winning the love of the people instead of enriching themselves through fraudulent means.
Professor YEMI OSINBAJO made the call in a bid to inspire a new crop of visionary elite in Nigeria; recalling that Nigeria’s history bears records of leaders who fired the imagination of the younger generation through their vision, diligence and selfless service. VP OSINBAJO noted that such visionary leaders did not live or fight to enrich themselves, and did not leave vast personal estates behind, but their names and legacies live in the hearts of the people. He was speaking during the opening ceremony of the Northern Reawakening Forum Summit at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja over the weekend. According to a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, LAOLU AKANDE, Professor OSINBAJO recalled the virtues of some of Nigeria’s founding fathers in the north, such as Sir AHMADU BELLO, Sir ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA and Mallam AMINU KANO. He said the pioneer leaders of the old Northern Nigeria clearly understood the varied issues affecting the region, and worked selflessly to realize them.
Speaking on the theme of the Summit, which emphasizes “Building a Safe, Secure and Economically Inclusive Northern Nigeria”, the Vice President underscored the derailment of the foundations set by the founding fathers which has led to prevailing challenges confronting the country. He decried the present situation in which most Nigerians remain poor despite the position of the country as the sixth largest producer of oil, with over one hundred varieties of solid minerals and precious metals, as well as hundreds of thousands of hectares of arable land.
