The US Marines are to help in ongoing military operations by local militias against the so-called Islamic State group in the stronghold of Raqqa.
Reports say the Marines arrived in Syria in the past few days to establish an outpost from which they will be able to fire artillery at Islamic State positions.
Before now, US Special Forces have been on the ground, advising the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces alliance.
