Two Rwandan rebel leaders have been sentenced by a court in Germany for masterminding attacks on civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The BBC reports that IGNACE MURWANASHYAKA and STRATON MUSONI were tried for mass murder and rape committed by militias between 2008 and 2009.
MURWANASHYAKA is the leader of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, while MUSONI is his deputy. MURWANASHYAKA was given a 13-year sentence, while MUSONI was jailed for eight years. The trial in Germany was carried out based on a law which allows the prosecution of foreigners for crimes committed outside Germany.
