Trial of Wisdom Gate School proprietor, four others suffers setback in Rivers High Court

The trial of the proprietor of Wisdom Gate School and four other management staff of the Eligbolo branch has suffered another setback at the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

When the matter came up for plea, prosecution counsel from the Office of the State Attorney General, Ministry of Justice, Damatamonu Opubo, applied for a motion seeking to amend the information, otherwise known as the charges against the defendants.

Although the defence counsel did not oppose the application, they informed the court that the amended processes were only served on them in court and requested time to study the documents and respond appropriately.

After listening to submissions from both parties, the trial judge, Justice Monina Danagogo, adjourned the matter to June 16, 2026, for hearing on the motion and plea.

The defendants are standing trial over allegations of culpability in the death of a two-year-old pupil, Wynne Akekue, who reportedly died within the school premises at Eligbolo, Port Harcourt.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, prosecution counsel Damatamonu Opubo, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice, said the application was necessary to properly regularise the charges and ensure a smooth continuation of the trial at the next adjourned date.

Also reacting, counsel representing civil society organisations and watching brief for the nominal complainant, Chetam Nwala, alleged attempts by some unnamed influential persons to interfere with the course of justice, warning that any further interference would be resisted and exposed.
