With just three days to the August 30 local government elections in Rivers State, former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has raised concerns over the exercise, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.
Speaking during a television interview, Cole said the entire process surrounding the elections is flawed, stressing that it violates both the spirit and letter of the constitution. He questioned the haste in conducting the polls under what he termed an “emergency rule,” warning that proceeding with such an election would set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
