Tinubu Sets Up Committee to Boost Funding for Ogoni Cleanup Project

President Bola Tinubu has established a committee to enhance funding for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), aimed at accelerating the environmental restoration of Ogoniland.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, announced this while addressing residents during the commissioning of completed water supply facilities in Bane and Gwara communities in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Lawal stated that given the severe environmental damage suffered by Ogoni communities over the years, no effort or resource committed to their restoration would be considered excessive. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to ensuring environmental justice and sustainable development in the region.

Chairman of HYPREP’s Board of Trustees, Emmanuel Deeyah, urged the Ogoni people to remain united and work together despite any differences, noting that unity is key to achieving the goals of the cleanup project.

Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Professor Neenibarini Zabbey, assured that the agency remains committed to delivering all its projects within the stipulated timelines and ensuring lasting results for the impacted communities.

Residents who spoke to our correspondent, Favour Zimoni, expressed gratitude for the newly commissioned water facilities, noting that they will no longer depend on streams as their source of drinking water.
