The US military confirmed that sixteen strikes was targeted at Raqqa, which IS regards as the capital of the caliphate it declared in Syria and Iraq in 2014.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least twenty-three IS members were killed in the attack, which is considered as one of the largest assaults in Syria so far.
The London-based monitoring group also claimed that six civilians, including a child, were killed in a US drone strike on a school in Raqqa on Saturday.
