The Nigerian Senate is looking to open the screening of incoming members of the Federal Executive Council to public participation.
The Senate has therefore called for members of the public to join the process, which begins tomorrow, by sending questions for ministerial nominees through the Senate’s Twitter handle @NGRSenate using the hashtag #MinisterialScreening.
Meanwhile; there are indications that the Senate may not follow strictly to its rule for screening of ministerial nominees, which requires the endorsement of at least two senators from the state of each nominee. According to a report quoting the Twitter handle of the Nigerian Senate, the federal lawmakers are considering waiving the rule on endorsement for nominees that pass other criteria for screening. The revelations are coming barely twenty-four hours to the beginning of the screening of the twenty-one names submitted the upper chamber of the National Assembly by President MUHAMMADU BUHARI. The screening of former Governor of Rivers State, ROTIMI AMAECHI for appointment as a minster had been placed in the balance after the Senate adopted rules for the exercise on Thursday last week. The former Rivers State Governor remains at loggerhead with PDP-led administration in his home state, which produced all three senators representing Rivers State in the National Assembly. The Rivers PDP Senators have already submitted a petition against the nomination of AMAECHI for appointment as a minister based on allegations of financial impropriety.
You will recall that ROTIMI AMAECHI joined a group of five PDP state governors that championed a historic mass defection of notable PDP bigwigs who joined the newly formed former opposition All Progressives Congress. AMAECHI went on to serve as Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organization, leading to defeat of the PDP and installation of President MUHAMMADU BUHARI.
