Spain cruised into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria in Inglewood, California. The Spaniards produced a dominant display to underline their status as one of the favourites for the title.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Spain had controlled much of the early exchanges, before Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the 66th minute. Oyarzabal then grabbed his second of the night late on to seal an emphatic win for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Austria had initially frustrated Spain, with goalkeeper Alexander Schlager making a series of important saves, but the European champions eventually found a way through and never looked back. Spain’s possession play and movement proved too much for the Austrians, who struggled to contain the attacking pressure.
Despite the comfortable result, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente urged caution afterwards, warning that complacency could be dangerous as the tournament progresses. The victory sends Spain into the knockout phase with growing momentum and confidence.
