A Port Harcourt-based security expert, Victor Umoren, has raised concerns over reports of alleged infiltration of armed bandits into the southern region, particularly Rivers State.
Umoren, a retired military personnel, expressed the concern in an interview with Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiohwhor, warning that political activities by government officials should not distract attention from emerging security threats.
The security consultant claimed that suspected bandits gain access to different states through various means, including being transported alongside cattle and other goods.
He called for stronger regulation of open grazing and the activities of motorcycle riders and cart pushers as part of measures to prevent the movement of criminal elements into communities.
Umoren also urged the government to ensure that the transportation of animals is halted at designated points outside Port Harcourt township.
He called for an immediate census of people entering and residing in the state, saying authorities should document their identities, residential addresses and contact persons to strengthen security monitoring.
The security expert further urged community leaders to work closely with security agencies and local vigilantes to identify residents and strangers within their communities.
He expressed concern that delays in regulating the activities of individuals whose identities and movements are unclear could worsen the security situation in Rivers State.
