The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has called on healthcare professionals to take a more active role in tackling the growing problem of drug abuse across the country.
Speaking at a symposium to mark the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, ARD President, Dr. Harold Chris-Biriowu, urged medical workers to go beyond clinical treatment by educating the public, advocating for prevention, and supporting people battling substance abuse. He described drug abuse as a societal crisis affecting families, workplaces and communities.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Metu Izuchukwu stressed the importance of prevention, noting that a drug-free lifestyle enables individuals to think clearly, achieve their goals and build healthier relationships. The Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor, commended the resident doctors for partnering with the hospital to combat drug abuse, while the event attracted stakeholders including the NDLEA, the Nigerian Medical Association, traditional rulers and the Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi.
