The Vice-Chancellor of the Rivers State University, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, says the institution’s monthly Walk for Life programme is designed to promote unity, collaboration and social bonding among staff and students.
Professor Zeb-Obipi stated this during the latest edition of the monthly walk held on the university campus in Port Harcourt.
He said the programme also encourages members of the university community to maintain physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.
The Vice-Chancellor urged staff and students to take advantage of the university’s free comprehensive medical screening, stressing that early detection of diseases could save lives and prevent complications.
Speaking on the importance of the medical exercise, the Director of Medical Services at Rivers State University, Dr Amadi Ikemgika, advised participants to regularly check their blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
Dr Ikemgika explained that medical screening goes beyond checking figures, as it provides an opportunity to detect diseases at an early stage.
He noted that early diagnosis and treatment could prevent complications, disability and the high cost associated with managing advanced illnesses.
Meanwhile, Godashe Football Club of Rivers State University has honoured Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi as its Grand Patron.
