RIVERS STATE TRANSPORT MINISTRY WARNS COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OWNERS: PAINT YOUR VEHICLES OFFICIAL COLOR OR FACE ACTION

The Commissioner for Transport, Collins Onunwo, announced this in a statement that from August 1st, tricycles, buses, and taxis without the official colour will be stopped from operating.

The ministry explained that this move aims to encourage uniformity and ensure subsidized rates.

It also disclosed that the ministry will collaborate with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to ensure that designated painters’ services are used.

Meanwhile, commercial drivers in Rivers State, under the umbrella of Drivers Welfare Club of Nigeria, have decried the financial constraints in meeting the new directive by the state’s Ministry of Transport that commercial drivers paint their vehicles with the official colour of the state.

Speaking in an interview with Today FM’s Sandra Kenneth, the drivers said the timing is wrong, adding that they can barely make a profit from their daily activities.

They stated that painting a vehicle requires at least eighty thousand naira and questioned how the state government intends to help reduce cost.

Meanwhile, the publicity secretary of the Drivers Welfare Club of Nigeria, Christopher Ezeani, speaking on behalf of the state chairman, pleaded with the state government to intervene and extend the deadline due to the rainy season, as painters hardly function during this period.

Ezeani also appealed to the Ministry of Transport to implement an inclusive policy in the selection of the enforcement team, noting that engaging only the National Union of Road Transport Workers may cause more chaos due to existing litigations against the union.
