Civil servants in Rivers State are calling for urgent intervention as they continue to face the non-payment of their June salaries. Many have disclosed that they are now forced to borrow money just to survive, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Some civil servants lamented that delays in salary payments were unprecedented during the administration of former Governor Siminalayi Fubara. They are now appealing to the sole administrator of the state, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, to expedite the payment of their owed salaries.
In addition to salary issues, civil servants in Rivers State are also grappling with inadequate basic amenities, including persistent shortages of electricity and water at the state secretariat under the current regime.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Higher King has voiced concern over the situation, warning that delays in salary payments constitute a violation of labor laws. He has called on Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas to take immediate action to settle the outstanding salaries and alleviate the suffering of public servants in the state.
