Gani Topba Files Human Rights Suit Against Police and Others

The leader of the Conscience of Ogoni People, Gani Topba, has instituted a fundamental human rights enforcement suit against the Nigeria Police Force and several individuals, including Lesi Maol, Emmanuel Deeyah and King Suanu Timothy-Baridam.

According to court documents, Topba is seeking declarations that his invitation, arrest, detention, release on bail and threatened prosecution constitute violations of his fundamental rights.

He is also asking the court to restrain the police from taking further actions that could interfere with ongoing engagements and investigations involving the Ogoni Dialogue Committee and other stakeholders concerning the Ogoni issue.

Topba questioned why the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Rivers State Police Command was investigating allegations bordering on defamation and called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police to monitor the activities of the unit.
