Rivers Government Reaffirms Commitment to Tackling Gender-Based Violence

The Rivers State Government has reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the state.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Lauretta Davies Dimkpa, gave the assurance during her opening remarks at the commencement of a three-day refresher training on Transformative GBV Prevention for members of the Rivers State Stakeholders Action Committee on GBV Prevention.

She commended ActionAid for its continued role in combating GBV and pledged the government’s readiness to strengthen partnerships with organisations and stakeholders working to end violence, particularly against women and girls.

Speaking in an interview, the Coordinator of the committee and Director of Public Defenders in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, Evelyn Membere Asimia, said the training was organised to equip members with updated strategies and solutions for preventing Gender-Based Violence in the state.

Also addressing participants, the Specialist Project Manager of ActionAid in the Lagos Regional Office, Vivian Efem-Bassey, encouraged the committee to initiate activities aimed at curbing GBV and eliminating harmful cultural practices affecting women and girls.

Our correspondent reports that the training drew participation from traditional rulers, NGOs and government officials, and is expected to conclude on Wednesday.
