A fresh attack has rocked the Rivers State University’s Emohua campus, with five persons reported missing after suspected hoodlums invaded a student lodge near the satellite campus and kidnapped occupants.
Chairman of Emohua Local Government, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, confirmed the development, stating that a student and a woman are among the victims, while the identities of the other three are yet to be established. He said a joint security team and members of the community have been deployed to comb surrounding bushes in search of the abducted persons.
Dr. Lloyd expressed confidence that all the victims will be rescued unhurt, assuring residents and students that security operations have been intensified in the area.
The attack occurred just hours after police arrested suspects linked to an earlier assault on RSU students, heightening concerns about worsening insecurity around the campus. Last week, students staged a protest demanding the relocation of the satellite campus over persistent attacks.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State University has announced the relocation of all 300- and 400-level students of its Etche satellite campus back to the main campus in Port Harcourt. The affected students are mainly from the Faculty of Agriculture.
Speaking during a media parley ahead of the university’s 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremonies, Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Zeb-Opibi said the relocation became necessary due to the lack of essential laboratory equipment at the Etche campus.
The university is set to graduate 13,240 students during the convocation scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
