The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his recent media comments against the party’s South-South leader, Rotimi Amaechi, describing the remarks as an attempt to convince Rivers people that the 2027 general election has already been decided.
In a statement, the party described as ironic Wike’s repeated claims that the opposition poses no threat while continuing to devote significant time and attention to criticizing its leaders. According to the ADC, such contradictions reflect political anxiety rather than confidence.
The statement, signed by the Rivers State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chizy Enyi, said Wike’s attempt to rewrite political history would not erase what it described as Amaechi’s record as one of the most influential political leaders to emerge from Rivers State.
The party maintained that Amaechi’s achievements in governance, public service, and national leadership speak for themselves and do not require validation from those who view politics through the lens of personal loyalty or political convenience.
The ADC also dismissed Wike’s references to previous elections, arguing that electoral outcomes are determined by Nigerians under prevailing political circumstances and that every election presents a different reality. It insisted that the 2027 election would be no exception.
According to the party, Rivers people are more concerned about pressing issues such as the economy, insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure, citizens’ welfare, and the rising cost of living than political disputes and personality clashes. It urged public office holders to focus on addressing these challenges.
The statement further rejected what it described as attempts by the FCT Minister to portray himself as the sole determinant of Rivers State’s political future, stressing that the state belongs to its people and that no individual has the exclusive right to decide how they will vote.
The Rivers ADC said it remains committed to providing credible leadership, responsible governance, and practical solutions to the challenges facing both the state and the country. It added that the party would continue to engage the electorate through its vision and programmes rather than participate in exchanges of personal attacks.
Responding to Wike’s assertion that only one political party could win Rivers State, the ADC said democratic outcomes are determined by voters, not by public declarations. The party advised the FCT Minister to concentrate on his responsibilities in administering the Federal Capital Territory and allow Rivers people to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation, propaganda, or political grandstanding.
