The Vice Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has criticized what he described as insulting remarks by the Presidency against Christians, particularly members of the Catholic faith.
Speaking during a live television programme, Amaechi said he was compelled to suspend mourning for his late mother to defend his faith, insisting that the comments attributed to the Presidency were unacceptable.
The former Rivers State governor also defended the position of the Catholic Bishops, saying their concerns about Nigeria’s economy and worsening insecurity were legitimate. According to him, the bishops are non-partisan and were simply urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the hardship facing Nigerians.
Amaechi further criticized the President’s reported remarks on elections, arguing that instead of making such statements, Tinubu should have reassured the Catholic Bishops and Nigerians of his commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
On his long-running political differences with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Amaechi said he would not engage in a war of words with someone he described as a former subordinate whom he had hired in the past.
