The Presidency has described the recent failure of sections of the Benin Agbor Asaba Expressway as an isolated incident, blaming the contractor handling the project for failing to execute the work professionally. The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, made this known on Wednesday while reacting to the condition of the highway and the President’s directive for its redesign and total reconstruction.
Dare said the Federal Government responded swiftly after the incident by deploying the Minister of Works, David Umahi, National Assembly members and other stakeholders to the affected section. He said the contractor was confronted over the failure and directed to take immediate action, stressing that the explanations given by the contractor did not excuse the poor state of the road.
The presidential aide said the condition of the highway should not be used to judge federal road projects across the country, noting that several other roads have either been completed or are progressing without similar complaints. He maintained that the Tinubu administration remains committed to improving road infrastructure while ensuring that contractors are held accountable for projects that fail to meet required standards.
