Former Liberian President George Weah has urged African leaders to embrace democratic principles, warning that leaders who govern like dictators pose a threat to democracy.
Weah made the call during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The former footballer-turned-politician used his experience in Liberia to underscore the importance of respecting democratic values.
He recalled his decision to concede defeat in the November 2023 presidential election even before the official counting of votes was completed.
Weah said the decision reflected his commitment to democracy and the peaceful transfer of power.
He urged African leaders to respect the will of the people and uphold democratic institutions rather than pursue actions that undermine the principles of democracy.
