The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has expressed confidence that Team Nigeria will surpass its projected medal haul at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Olopade said the country’s campaign remains on course, noting that weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong exceeded expectations by winning a silver medal after she was initially projected to claim bronze.
He also expressed optimism that Nigeria’s athletics team would significantly boost the country’s medal tally, revealing that he expects the athletes to win between seven and eight gold medals.
The NSC Director-General praised the commitment of the athletes and officials, saying their performances reflect the depth of talent in Nigerian sports and the impact of ongoing efforts to improve athletes’ welfare.
Olopade reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to providing the support needed for Team Nigeria to achieve success and make the country proud at the Games.
