The Leader of the Conscience of Ogoni People, Chief Gani Topba, has raised concerns over an alleged plot to use operatives of the Nigeria Police Force to arrest and secretly arraign him before a magistrate court without proper investigation.
He alleged that the move is linked to a petition he filed against King Suanu Timothy Yormaadam Baridam, Emmanuel Deeyah, who serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), and Lesi Mao, over their alleged involvement in a legal dispute against the Federal Government concerning OML 11.
Chief Topba maintained that he stands by his petition but warned that the police must not be used to carry out unlawful actions. He insisted that if there is any petition against him, due process must be followed, including formal invitation and opportunity to respond.
He further cautioned that any arrest not carried out within legal procedures may be resisted through lawful means, while expressing confidence in the professionalism of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
The Ogoni leader also criticized the Chairman of Khana Local Government Council, Thomas Barrire, over the continued ban on motorcycle operations in the area following the killing of a suspected cultist. He urged the judiciary, particularly the Chief Judge, to take disciplinary action against any magistrate found to be involved in unlawful proceedings.
