The move was based on observation by Senator OLUREMI TINUBU of the APC for Lagos West that it appeared work was yet to commence on the Ogoni cleanup after twelve months.
Standing on a motion to commemorate World Environment Day; the Lagos Senator said there was need for government to be proactive in addressing environmental challenges in the country.
She said such issues have widespread effect on the economy, health, and social well-being of the people.
In adopting the motion; the Senate Committee on Environment was mandated to investigate the Ogoni cleanup programme and report back for further legislative intervention.
The Senate also resolved to call on governments at all levels to create a realistic framework in line with the Sustainable Development Goals for the protection of the environment.
