The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), led by Andah Wai-Ogosu, has announced activities to mark this year’s Ogoni Martyrs Day, which commemorates 30 years since the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists.
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Ansalem John-Miller, said the week-long programme will begin on November 6 with a memorial lecture in honour of the martyrs, whose execution in 1995 sparked global outrage and renewed calls for environmental justice in Ogoniland.
John-Miller added that the commemoration will climax on November 10 with a mega rally in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, bringing together community members, civil society groups and supporters of the Ogoni struggle to honour the legacy of the fallen activists.
Ogoni Martyrs Day is observed annually to honour those who lost their lives advocating for environmental protection, human rights and justice for the Ogoni people.
