Linguistic Association Faults FG Reversal of National Language Policy

The Linguistic Association of Nigeria has criticised the Federal Government’s decision to reverse the 2022 National Language Policy, describing the move as a setback for the country’s education system.

In a communiqué signed by its Secretary, Professor Ebitare Obikudo, the Association urged government to halt the reversal immediately. It warned that scrapping the policy — which promotes mother-tongue-based multilingual education at the early and basic school levels — would undermine decades of educational progress.

The Association maintained that the 2022 policy is not merely an administrative framework but a moral and educational necessity for Nigerian children. It noted that the policy aligns with the National Policy on Education, which recommends early instruction in the learner’s mother tongue or language of the immediate environment.

It called on the Federal Government to reconsider its decision and fully implement the 2022 language policy in the interest of cultural preservation and inclusive national development.
