The Rivers State Coordinator of the African Women Lawyers Association of Nigeria, Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, who made the call in Port Harcourt, said the IWD is observed to draw attention to the experiences of widows and also galvanize support for them.
Desmond Ihekaire, stressed the celebration is aimed at raising awareness on the problems associated with widowhood around the world, which she said is almost invincible.
The AWLA boss who further expressed worry that despite the enacted laws criminalizing inhuman treatment of widows, the trend has continued unhindered, warned those involves in such act to desist, while also calling on widows facing such treatment to speak up.
The theme of the 2023 International Widows Day is; Innovation and technology for gender equality.
