It appears the prevailing fuel scarcity across Rivers State may last longer, as efforts to end the dispute at the center of the crisis are slow in producing positive results. This is because a mediatory meeting that was scheduled for yesterday between the relevant parties failed to hold for no clear reason. The meeting was meant to be attended by the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, the Rivers State Government, the State Police Command, the Trade Union Congress and Weatherford Nigeria Limited.
You will recall that the two major unions in the oil and gas sector declared a strike, suspending the lifting of petroleum products by tanker drivers following a dispute between the management of Weatherford and NUPENG. The matter got out of hand after the police were allegedly used to molest members of NUPENG who had embarked on a peaceful demonstration outside the premises of Weatherford in Port Harcourt last week. The South-South Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, GODWIN ERUBA told correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA that the strike by members of the union continues, as the issues in dispute remain unresolved.
