Impeachment Against Rivers Governor Fubara Hits Snag as Two Lawmakers Withdraw Support

The impeachment attempt against Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, suffered a setback on Wednesday as two more members of the State House of Assembly withdrew their backing for the move.

Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, called on their colleagues to halt the impeachment process and pursue an amicable resolution to the political crisis engulfing the state. Their withdrawal follows earlier interventions by Minority Leader Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Hon. Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency), who had urged restraint.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Port Harcourt, Barile Nwakoh acknowledged that the Assembly had already issued a notice of impeachment against Governor Fubara and his deputy, but appealed for reconciliation and calm.

Echoing similar sentiments, Emilia Amadi said her decision to withdraw support was influenced by appeals from prominent national figures and concerned citizens. She also confirmed that the FCT Minister had been informed of her new position regarding the impeachment process.

The development adds another twist to the ongoing political drama in Rivers State, raising hopes for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government.
