Dangote Refinery to More Than Double Processing Capacity to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has unveiled plans to expand its processing capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd over the next three years. The announcement was made by the Managing Director of Dangote Refinery Plc, David Bird, during a press briefing at the refinery complex in Lagos.

Bird explained that the expansion would follow an accelerated execution timeline through what he described as the “ruthless replication” of the existing plant design. He noted that the project would not require any redesign or re-engineering, allowing the company to move directly into procurement and construction.

According to the Managing Director, this strategy is intended to significantly shorten the delivery timeline while ensuring efficiency and continuity with the current operational model. The expansion is part of Dangote Refinery’s broader plan to meet rising domestic and regional fuel demand and further strengthen Nigeria’s refining capacity.

Bird added that the refinery is committed to maintaining operational excellence throughout the expansion, with the goal of contributing to energy security and reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
