In a concerted effort to address the escalating crisis of plastic pollution, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), under the leadership of Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, has unveiled several strategic interventions aimed at fostering environmental sustainability through nature-based solutions and enhanced citizen participation.
Marking the 2025 World Environment Day, which bears the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” HYPREP emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat this global menace. The organization underscored that tackling plastic pollution requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving government agencies, industry players, communities, and individuals.
As part of these initiatives, HYPREP, in collaboration with the Green Frontiers, will launch a sensitization campaign targeting fisherfolk at Bomu fishing port. The campaign aims to educate local communities on practical measures to reduce plastic waste in the creeks and waterways, thereby safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and livelihoods.
In a statement issued to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day, HYPREP reiterated its commitment to raising awareness and galvanizing local action. The project called on all stakeholders to develop and implement policies that curb plastic pollution, ensure compliance with existing regulations, and minimize activities contributing to environmental degradation.
This collaborative effort underscores HYPREP’s dedication to fostering sustainable environmental practices and highlights the importance of citizen engagement in achieving meaningful change in the fight against plastic pollution.
