Hard times await prosecutors and investigation who may be found wanting in the cause of handling high profile corruption cases. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, ABUBAKAR MALAMI, said anyone that falls short of professional standards would be sanctioned. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the Attorney General denied claims that the Federal Government was violating the rule of law in the case involving former National Security Adviser, SAMBO DASUKI. There you heard the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, ABUBAKA MALAMI.
The Rivers State branch of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has warned against any attempt to adjust the national minimum wage of eighteen thousand naira. State Chairman of the TUC, CHIKA ONUEGBU gave this indication in reaction to a statement released by the Nigeria Governors Forum, indicating that state governments will no longer be unable to meet their obligations to workers based on the national minimum wage. In a statement obtained by our correspondent, ONUEGBU said the TUC agrees that the Nigerian economy is in bad shape due mainly to fall in the price of oil from one hundred and fifteen dollars per barrel in June last year to less than forty-eight dollars presently. He said the TUC recognizes that a lot of the factors responsible for the current situation of the economy can be traced to poor governance and corruption by the political class.
The TUC blamed political leaders at all levels for failing to stop large scale oil theft of some four hundred thousand barrels per day. The union also noted that it was up to the political leadership to diversify the economy away from oil and gas, which they refused to do.
The TUC warns that this was not the time for any unilateral action by any level of government, as such will be resisted by the workers and the Unions that represent them. The union appealed to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to dialogue with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress with a view to achieve win-win solutions to the current economic crises rather than making vexatious pronouncements that are capable of deepening the economic crises and overheating the polity.
