FIFA has confirmed it will examine a proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup from 48 to 64 teams following the conclusion of the ongoing 2026 tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the proposal would be discussed by the governing body’s relevant committees, noting that expanding the competition would give more countries the opportunity to qualify and help promote football globally.
Infantino described the 48-team format introduced at the 2026 World Cup as a success, citing the improved performances of teams from different continents.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay each staging one opening match as part of the tournament’s centenary celebrations.
