Court Clears Road for Rivers LG Elections

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ruled that there is no legal impediment to stop the local government elections scheduled for tomorrow, August 30th.

The court on Thursday dismissed a motion ex parte filed by Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Williams Abayomi-Stanley, seeking to halt the elections. The suit was brought against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), and its Chairman.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Stephen Jumbo, held that the application lacked merit. However, he granted an order for substituted service to the defendants.

Justice Jumbo further directed that the elections should proceed as scheduled and adjourned the case to September 10th, 2025, for hearing of the substantive suit.
