Here in Nigeria, governments at all levels are being called upon to key into the theme of the day which emphasizes the need to recruit more teachers to fill in missing gaps in schools.
Doctor BEN NYEWUSIRA of the Faculty of Education in the University of Port Harcourt made the call in an interview with our correspondent.
Doctor NYEWUSIRA who teaches in the Department of Educational Foundations at UNIPORT said it was symbolic to set aside a day to celebrate the teaching profession.
The United National Educational and Scientific Organisation, UNESCO in 1994 proclaimed the 5th October to be World Teachers’ Day.
The occasion also celebrates the adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in 1997 of the recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel.
