Concerned students of Rivers State University have called on the institution’s management to urgently improve infrastructure and learning facilities across its satellite campuses, particularly the Faculty of Social Sciences campus in Emohua.
In an open letter addressed to the university management, the students said the appeal was aimed at drawing attention to the pressing infrastructural and academic challenges affecting the campus.
They identified major concerns including inadequate lecture halls, the absence of a functional library, poor ICT facilities, unreliable power supply, security challenges, insufficient student accommodation, poorly equipped staff offices, inadequate waste management, poor sanitation, limited convenience facilities, and the lack of banking services within the campus environment.
The students said overcrowded classrooms and the absence of modern learning resources were negatively affecting teaching, learning, and academic research. They also called for improved transportation services and better access roads to ease movement for students, lecturers, and visitors, as well as additional clean and well-maintained toilet facilities to promote hygiene.
According to the students, the challenges have continued to hinder effective learning, reduce staff productivity, and diminish the overall academic experience. They urged the university management to address the issues to enhance student welfare, improve academic performance, and strengthen the institution’s reputation.
Investigations indicate that similar infrastructural challenges also exist in several other Rivers State University satellite campuses across the state.
