The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Nasarawa State, Rev. Dr. Sunday Emma, has called on Christians to actively participate in elections, declaring that refusing to vote is a sin because it amounts to neglecting a fundamental civic responsibility.
Speaking with journalists in Lafia, Rev. Emma said the Bible enjoins believers to obey constituted authority and contribute to the development of society through active participation in the democratic process. He stressed that once elections are scheduled, every eligible citizen has a duty to cast their vote.
The cleric urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and reject the belief that votes do not count. According to him, active participation is essential to electing credible leaders and addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges.
Rev. Emma also encouraged voters to peacefully protect the sanctity of their votes and expressed hope that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would conduct free and fair elections. He, however, lamented the growing trend of election outcomes being determined by the courts rather than at the polling units, while calling on members of the judiciary to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties.
