UK Introduces New Settlement Rules for Asylum Seekers

The United Kingdom government has introduced new immigration reforms requiring asylum seekers who can afford it to contribute about £10,000 towards the cost of their accommodation and financial support before they can apply for permanent settlement.

Under the new policy, asylum seekers with sufficient financial means will be expected to repay part of the public funds spent on their housing and welfare while their claims were being processed.

The UK government said the measure is aimed at making the asylum system fairer and ensuring that taxpayers are not solely responsible for the cost of supporting individuals who are able to contribute.

The reforms form part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen immigration policies and reduce pressure on the country’s asylum support system.
