The Minister who revealed in Abuja said the ministry had in April received the application from CONUA which is to be formed out of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to be registered as a new union in the university.
He said the application was awaiting deliberation as stipulated by Trade Union laws, after which a committee will be set up to define modalities before it will be approved.
NGIGE further added that it would be the duty of a committee set up on the matter to reveal whether CONUA would duplicate the functions of ASUU or not.
The National Coordinator of CONUA, NIYI ISMAHEEL, has stated that CONUA has the sole purpose of redefining unionism and restoring peace and stability in the universities in Nigeria.
He also assured that the union will help put to an end to unnecessary delays in the academic calendar of Nigerian students, following frequent strike actions.
