The suggestion by DOGARA is coming less than a week after members of the two chambers voted against a proposed amendment to sections of the 1999 Constitution that deals with restructuring.
The Speaker stressed the need to overhaul the current security architecture of Nigeria, as it has to do with policing, adding that there was the need to de-militarize the country.
He said the House of Representatives will revisit a Bill for Amendment of Section 315 of Constitution to limit the powers of the president.
YAKUBU DOGARA however cautioned against the establishment of new security agencies, just as he expressed worry about the spate of insecurity across Nigeria.
DOGARA said reports of rampant kidnappings, acts of terrorism, civil strife and threats to Nigeria’s corporate existence demand proper equipping, staffing and training of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Speaker made the observations in a speech at the opening of a public hearing by the House Committee on Defence on six related bills that are before the National Assembly.
The bills which are all sponsored by members of the House include a proposed amendment of the Armed Forces Act, to make the appointment of Service Chiefs subject to the confirmation of the National Assembly.
There are also a Bill for an Act to establish the Security Services Welfare Infrastructure Development Commission; and a Bill for an Act to repeal the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria Act.
