This is happening for the first time in forty years of the establishment of the Community Service Programme of the university.
To set the ball rolling; stakeholders within the university and the surrounding host communities attended the inaugural workshop to share ideas on the benefits of community service.
The Acting Director of the Central Community Service, Doctor HELLEN IMAFIDOR said the main objective is to inculcate in both staff and students the consciousness of their responsibility to society.
Doctor IMAFIDOR also noted that projects that are usually undertaken for community service are practical and require the application of skills by students.
She challenged the students to take the community service component of their studies serious, as it prepares them to become self-reliant in future.
The UNIPORT Acting Director of Central Community Service Unit also appealed for understanding from host communities in the execution of community service assignments by students.
On her part; Professor JULIE OMUKORO of the Department of Theatre Arts of the University of Port Harcourt spoke on the role of theatre in community service.
However; Professor OMUKORO stressed that every community service initiative must have the potential to deliver mutual benefits.
Professor JOHNY OGUNJI of the Ebonyi State University, who was also a guest speaker at the workshop, said community service forms part of a tripod upon which a university is established.
